No Good Very Bad Day

Yesterday was not the best of days, I had agreed to go to a chook auction in Berry to sell some chooks for myself and a friend and also to pick up some lovely new Wyandotte pullets that the the very kind organiser thought I would like. Unfortunately the weather was as revolting as it could possibly be so the 2 hour journey, beginning at 5.30am, was pretty stressful. Not only was it dark and peeing down but there was also bloody fog. I was very glad that my car was serviced last week and had 4 new tyres I can tell you.

Unfortunately the auction was pretty quiet because of the weather so we did not get very good prices for our pairs of chickens but at least they sold - we are not allowed to keep roosters in the city so I didn't want to have to bring them all the way back again.

I had also hoped to get a new Brahma friend for my favourite chicken who has not been very well lately, first with an infection that required antibiotics and then with the dreaded fowl pox. I thought her recovery was progressing well but when I arrived home and went to tell her that there were no Brahma friends for her, she had died in her nest.

She was the first chick I hand raised and had the most beautiful nature, I called her Honeybum because of the gorgeous colour of her big fluffy bottom but sadly she has now gone. I think the ghastly weather must have been the last straw for her compromised immune system. She will be sadly missed.

And it's still bucketing down after more than 48 hours of almost constant rain.

Thanks guys, I know my family are all thinking that she was only a bloody chicken but she was a lovely natured one, very pretty and always wanting to hang around my feet. My flock just doesn't look right now with no big buff girl in it.

I do have a gorgeous Brahma chick but it is only two weeks old so won't be out with the main flock for months.

Hi MW - thanks, yes we're fine now, it's stopped raining thank goodness, it was only 3 days in the end but it seemed like a lot longer. Good for the garden though, I have planted loads of seeds this week.

I am sorry for your loss:( I know what it is like to hand raise a chick & how close you get! My "Willow" (Barnevelder) fell out the nest the first night, she was stone cold and stiff. I picked her up to keep my 7yr old from seeing her this way and while giving my little one a hug, Willow twitched slightly. Not getting our hopes up we spend the next week warming& nursing the little gal. It paid off, now we have a gorgeous pullet ready to start laying. She still likes to cuddle up and have a chat. Take care, Yollie (fairycastlefarm).

Hi Yollie, I dropped by your blog, that rabbit is hilarious - just like my naughty Chloe who thinks she is a chook. She knows her name but ignores me unless I call "chook chook", she will not stay in the hutch without getting really grumpy so I let her live with the chooks. I figure that if something bad happens to her at least she didn't have to spend her life in a cage being miserable.
Thanks Rolley it is sad but it's not like being in Christchurch or Japan so I will get over myself.
