Back to Basics Challenge

Sowing Seed
  • Kale (Nero de Toscana)
  • Cabbage Mini
  • Cauliflower Mini
  • Leeks (Jaune de Poitou)
  • Carrots (Amsterdam
  • Snowpeas (Oregon and Roi de Carouby)
  • Peas (Greenfeast)
  • Basil ( Sweet Genovese)
  • Coriander
Planting Out
  • Lettuce (Cos and Green Mignonette)
  • Parsley (relocation)
Harvesting (Not much)
  • Baby carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Strange yellow zucchinis
  • Grape tomatoes (self sown)
  • Beetroot
  • Rhubarb
  • Lots of herbs
Maintenance
  • Pulling out messy and diseased tomato plants
  • Staking and netting remaining tomato plants to keep possums off
  • Mulching around new vege patches
  • Mosquito netting broccoli to deter Cabbage moths



I found this on the road side when I was scouring the neighbourhood for escaped rabbits.  It is fantastic, not a caterpillar in sight, I might actually get a decent broccoli crop this time round. (fingers crossed)




Planning for the Future
  • One more vege bed planned - Broad beans
  • More planting to be done in April - garlic, onions and other alliums
Working for the Future
  • Buying and bottling tomatoes
  • Sorting seeds into autumn and spring planting so I don't forget any
  • Soaking parsnip seeds for planting
Building Community
  • seed sharing, bought and saved seeds
  • Increasing the proportion of produce bought at farmers/organic market
Learning New Skills
  • Trying to follow Moon Planting Guide
  • Learning Patience so that I can plant on the right days
  • Preserving tomatoes and beetroot
  • Economising (no new shoes)

I hope you find the netting helpful...I find it keeps those pesky aphids off too.
Clean broccoli is easy this way.
Make sure that there were no eggs on the leaves before you put the netting up though (she says speaking from experience here! ) :)

Hi Scarecrow,
One of the cats likes to open the nets and sleep underneath so its not foolproof. I did have a few eggs but I check them every so often and remove offenders so are they looking fantastic. Just wish I could find some more mosquito nets. I have been scouring charity shops for curtains or nets to no avail.
Love your blog by the way, it was yours that got me interested in blogging in the first place. :-)
